It all started with a mom and a salon. For convenience, Gabriel's mother would bring him and his two younger brothers along to where she got her hair done, and the three boys would get cut while they were there. His mother pointed him to his father, his father took him to a cousin, and that cousin happened to be a barber. Gabriel took the few tips he learned that day home with him. A few days later, his little brother came running in with a pair of clippers from Walmart, and that was what started it all. The early years were not glamorous. There were uneven lines, nervous brothers in the chair, and plenty of practice cuts that taught him more by going wrong than by going right. But family kept showing up. One brother became two. Two brothers became uncles. And the day he was finally able to charge a little money for his work was the day everything changed.
For a while, Gabriel thought the answer was a nine-to-five, the way everyone said it should be. It didn't take long to learn that wasn't his way of living. What he loved, what he had always loved, was cutting hair. He came up under his uncle at a barbershop in San Diego, the master barber who taught him to believe in himself and pushed him to compete among his peers at the Barber Battles competition. Trophies followed. So did recognition, and the rare honor of becoming a master barber himself, one who now teaches the next generation of students the same way his own family once taught him.
After everything, Gabriel made a deliberate choice. He stepped away from the traditional barbershop and built his own private studio. It's a quieter, more personal setting, and that's exactly the point. Every chair he's ever stood behind has been about one thing, helping someone walk out looking and feeling like the best version of themselves. That's the work. It always has been.
